The single biggest risk in this market is buying from a trading company that presents itself as a factory. The difference matters for three reasons: price, control, and accountability.
price - a real manufacturer prices from its own production cost. A middleman layers margin on top of someone else's.
quality control - a factory inspects at its own line. A trading company inspects at someone else's, when it inspects at all.
accountability - when a spec drifts or a batch fails, a factory has to answer for it. A trader can point at the factory it doesn't own.
How do you tell the difference without flying there? Ask for production equipment lists, assembly line photos or video, the factory address, and the number of units produced per month. A factory can answer those without hesitation. A trader usually goes quiet or deflects.
Ask who owns the production line. If the answer is "we work with several partner factories," that's a trading company telling you the truth - which is useful information, just not the same as buying direct.
Certifications Are Not Optional
Electric bikes cross borders on paper as much as on ships. The certifications decide whether your container clears customs and whether your bikes can legally be sold, and they are not interchangeable:
UL 2849 - market: United States. What it covers: electrical system safety for ebikes, including battery and charger.
UL 2271 - market: United States. What it covers: lithium-ion battery pack safety for light electric vehicles.
CE - market: European Union. What it covers: conformity for sale within the EU, covering the full ebike.

OEM and ODM: What Customization Actually Means
Most buyers importing in volume eventually want their own brand. That means knowing what the supplier can and cannot do:
logo and color - the lowest level of customization. Nearly every factory does this.
package and manual - boxes, branding, paperwork in your language and your market's format.
frame and component changes - different motor, battery, tires, racks. This is where a factory's engineering matters and a trader hits its limit.
full product design (ODM) - a new model developed for you. This is a real engineering relationship, and it needs a supplier with an R&D team, not an order desk.
Be honest about your stage. If you're on your first container, logo and packaging are usually enough. If you're building a brand over years, the supplier's R&D depth matters more than its catalog.
Capacity and Lead Time: Numbers That Keep You Honest
Wholesale buying is a logistics problem wearing a product problem's clothes. Before you commit, get concrete numbers and sanity-check them:
monthly output - does the factory's capacity match your order cadence? A factory doing a few hundred units a month cannot suddenly own your 5,000-unit order schedule.
lead time per model - standard models are usually faster than custom. Ask what's realistic, then add buffer.
production stages - assembly lines, pre-install stations, packing and inspection. A supplier that walks you through its line is showing you its capacity.
peak-season pressure - everyone is late in Q3. Ask how they handle capacity spikes, not just how fast they quote.
When a supplier quotes a lead time, ask what it's based on. "Usually about X weeks" is a guess. A production schedule is an answer.
Location Matters More Than It Looks
Your supplier's location determines your inspection cost, your freight cost, and how easy it is to fix a problem in person. For buyers sourcing from China, the practical question is whether the factory is near the major ports and trade hubs you'll use - and whether a factory visit is a half-day trip or a project.
A factory close to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, for example, means the Canton Fair circuit and both international airports are within reach, which makes audits and visits realistic instead of symbolic. Distance from the port also shows up in your freight quote.
After-Sales: Where Cheap Suppliers Fall Apart
The order that matters is the one you place after the first container has issues. Ask a wholesale supplier about after-sales before you buy:
spare parts - are replacement batteries, chargers, controllers and brakes stocked, and at what lead time?
warranty terms - what's covered, what's excluded, and how are claims handled?
technical support - who answers your dealer's questions when a bike won't start or a charger fails?
documentation - manuals, wiring diagrams, and the paperwork your market requires for import.
Every supplier is great before you pay. The ones that answer after-sales questions in writing, with specifics, are the ones worth the higher unit price.
